Gone with the wind - Risks of waves, wind and finance
The estimation of the probability for rare events is of uttermost practical importance. Examples are the stability of wind turbines against extraordinary strong storms, the ability of ships to escape from hits by monster waves, but also the optimal strategy in the stock market to minimize the risks in a crash. The most simple model, based on a linear superposition of random events usually underestimates the probability for rare events by orders of magnitude. Non-linear models, being popular in particular in oceanography, pose a possible explanation for this failure, but there is evidence that already in the linear regime there may be strong deviations from the simple model, which have to be considered. It seems that very similar ideas had been developed in different contexts, without mutual knowledge of each other, a situation occurring quite often. In particular so-called k distributions have shown up repeatedly. It is the idea of this workshop to bring together experts from different fields to join their expertises with the hope to arrive at an universal description covering a variety of situations.

To get to the CIC one must follow this small road for 3 minuts, and then turn left. Bus number 1 will take you there both from the Guest House and from Hotel Posada Tlaltenango, but a taxi can also be convenient for a group of 2, 3, or 4 people.
